Get involved

There are lots of opportunities for involvement at Durham City Methodists to support our worship and other activities.

Singers and musicians

We have a small choir which leads the singing at the morning service at Elvet and contributes an anthem to the service every two or three weeks. Our singers rehearse from 9.30-10.15 on a Sunday morning in Elvet Church. New singers are always welcome – speak to any member of the choir or just turn up to a rehearsal if you would like to join us.

There are also other opportunities for musicians to contribute to our services at Elvet and North Road: we have a rota of organists/pianists, and use other instruments for accompanying singing when appropriate. Speak to any of our musicians or email the choir leaders if you would like to join in with our music-making.

The National Pipe Organs register includes detailed information about the organs at North Road and at Elvet. Organists wishing to use an instrument for practice or to volunteer to play occasionally for services, weddings or funerals should get in touch with the Elvet Organist, Professor Brian Tanner.

Sound and Zoom

At both our churches we take the provision of sound reinforcement seriously. It is our intention as well as an obligation to ensure that everyone can hear what is being said in church, especially anyone who has hearing difficulties. We have a loop for hearing aid users in the church in both buildings, and in the hall and upper room at Elvet.

Our morning services are broadcast on Zoom and recorded for distribution on our Facebook page later in the week. We have a small team who regularly operate the tech needed for this and the sound system. Additional team members are always welcome – please get in touch!

Flowers

If you are interested in joining our team of flower arrangers, or in donating to our flower fund to commemorate a special occasion or just to beautify our churches for the sake of it, please get in touch.

Greeters

We always welcome volunteers to assist the stewards by greeting people at the church door, handing out hymn books and making everybody welcome. Contact us to join the rota.

Readers

We like to hear a wide range of voices during our services – volunteers can contact us to join a rota to be involved in reading Bible passages, meditations and prayers.

Coffee

We serve coffee, tea, juice and biscuits after all our services and can always use extra volunteers on the rota for this too – please get in touch!

Concert stewards

When groups hire one of our churches to give a concert, we need volunteers from the church to ensure they can find everything they need and to ensure they leave the building as they found it at the end of their concert.
